The root cause of Sri Lanka’s problems – The Primitiveness of the Sinhalese

Update 11th February 2018: Given the amazing election victory for the the SLPP, it looks like the vast majority of Sinhalese have finally improved themselves. I will leave the article below as a reminder to all how dire things looked during the dark three years from 2015-2018.

The events of the past 3 years have been nothing short of shocking. We have seen a massive crime wave, corruption from unelected ministers, the biggest bank robbery in the history of any nation – orchestrated by the goons and henchmen of the prime minister and the ruling party, a soaring cost of living, key strategic infrastructure sold off, the health service in near collapse – with a catastrophic dengue epidemic claiming thousands of lives, the universities in disarray, garbage piled up in the streets and once shining cities stinking to high heaven, the nation’s leaders tightening the hangman’s noose around our heroic military, food scarcity and worsening hunger and malnutrition, the imposition of a colonial, minority-rule constitution, and the economy in total free-fall. Worst of all, we have seen the nation deprived of any and all elections, from the lowest level of societal organization upwards.

And despite it all, what is most astounding is how the people have sat and watched, with nary a whimper of protest as their franchise has been taken away from them by the foreign-backed rulers who came to office pledging “good governance.” For three years, every election has been cancelled on the flimsiest of pretext, and often the rulers did not even deign to give any reason at all.

What all this highlights is not just the power-hunger of the present rulers, nor their obvious fear of the popularity of the Rajapaksa movement, but rather the total backwardness and lack of sophistication of the Sinhala mass of the country.

සිරිසේනගේ අපරාධ

මෛත්‍රිපාල සිරිසේන ජනාතිපති ධුරයට ආවේ පොරොන්දු කිපෙයක් ප්‍රකාෂ කරලා. ජනතාව ඒවා පිලිගෙන, ඡන්දය දුන්නා, මේ හිමින් කතාකරන මිනිහාව විශ්වස්ස කරන්න පුළුවන් කියලා.

මහින්ද රාජපක්ෂගේ යුගය දේශද්‍රෝහී දෙමල ත්‍රස්තවාදීන් පරද්දලා යුද්දය දිනුවාට, රටේ පාර්ලිමේන්තුව ඇතුලේ හැංගිලා හිටපු ද්‍රෝහීන් සුද්ද කරපු නැති නිසා තමයි මේ භයානක තැනට රාජපක්ෂ පවුලයි මුළු රටයි වැටිලා තියෙන්නේ.

කෙසේවෙතත්, සිරිසේන බලය ගත්තේ රට‍ වෙනස් කරනවා කියලා. වෙනස් කරනවා විතරක් නෙවෙයි, බොහෝම හොඳින් පාලනය කරලා, රට‍ දියුණු කරනවා කිව්වා. ඒකට “යහපාලනය” කියන නමකුත් දැම්මා. බලමු දැන් මොන යහපාලනයක්ද මේ මිනිහ හදලා තියෙන්න කියලා.

1. ජනවාරි 9 වනිදා, 2015.
ජනාදිපතිකම ලැබිලා, සිරිසේන UNP ආණ්ඩුවක් පත්කරා. මේක තමයි පළවෙනි හොරකම. ඒ වෙලාවේ බහුතර ආසන ප්‍රමාණය තිබුනේ SLFP පක්ෂයට. රනිල්ගේ UNP ජන්ද සහ ඊළාම් ජන්ද වලින් ජනාදිපති ධුරයට ආවට, සිරිසෙනට කිසිම අයිතියක් තිබුන් නැහැ මෙහෙම හොර ආණ්ඩුවක් පත්කරන්න.
රටේ නීතියට එරෙහිව, අපරධයක් කරා.

2. ජුලි 2015.
මාස හතක් බොරු චෝදනා දදා, හිටපු ආණ්ඩුවේ නිලදාරියෝ අත්අඩංගුවට ගෙනිය ගෙනිය හිටියා. හොර ආණ්ඩුව තියාගන, පාර්ලිමේන්තු මැතිවරණයක් තියන්නෙම නැහැමයි කිය කිය හිටියා. හැබැයි රනිල්ගේ යාලුවා මහේන්ද්‍රන් සෙන්ට්‍රල් බැංකුව මංකොල්ල කාපු නිසා (බොන්ඩ් ස්කෑම් එකෙන් මහේන්ද්‍රන්ගේ පුතා සල්ලි ගොඩක් “හම්බ” කරා), ඒක ගැන COPE පරීක්ෂණ කරලා, රිපෝට් එක එළිකරන්න යනකොට, රනිලුයි එයාගේ පඹයා, සිරිසෙනට හදිස්සියක් ආවා පාර්ලිමේන්තුව විසුරුවා හැරීමට.

තවත් අපරාධයක් හංගන්න බැලුවා, හැබැයි ඕන කෙනෙකුට පේනවා මේ අපරාධය.

3. අගෝස්තු 2015.
සිරිසේන–රනිල් නඩයට මැතිවරණය දිනා ගන්න බැරිවුනා. රටේ ජනතාව මහින්දට හිතවත් SLFP මන්ත්‍රීවරුන් ප්‍රවේශමෙන් තෝරා පාර්ලිමේන්තුවට පත් කරා. මහින්දට බැනපු මන්ත්‍රීවරුන් ප්‍රතික්ෂේප කරා. ජනතාව හිතුවේ SLFP එක මහින්දගේ ප්‍රදානත්වයෙන් වැඩ කරලා, රට පාලනය කරයි කියලා.

සිරිසේන මොකද කරේ?

ඉස්සෙල්ලාම SLFP සභාපතව වෙනස් කරා. මැතිවරණයෙන් පසුව ජාතික ලැයිස්තුව වෙනස් කරලා මහින්දට හිතවත් මන්ත්‍රීවරුන් අයින් කරා. මැතිවරණ කොමසාරිස් දේශප්‍රිය මේ හොර වැඩේ කරන්න සිරිසේනට ඉඩ දුන්නා. (දේශප්‍රිය මහා ලොකු යහපාලනය කාරයෙක්, එයාගේ මල්ලි ස්විට්සර්ලන්තයේ NGO එකක වැඩකරනවා, යුද්දෙ දිනපු දා ඉඳන් ලංකාවට බැන බැන, රටේ නම කැත කර කර ඉන්නේ.)

UNPය, JVPය සහ දෙමළ ත්‍රස්ටවදින්ගේ TNAයත් එක්ක සම්බන්ද වෙලා, සිරිසේන හැදුවා “ජාතික” ආණ්ඩුවක්. SLFPයයි UNPයයි එකතු කරලා, හොර රෙජිමෙයක් පත් කලා. මහා ලොකුවට “මහින්ද ඇමතිකන් වැඩියෙන් දුන්නා, මේක මහා නාස්තියක්, මාව ජනාතදිපති කරන්න, මම එහෙම ඒවා කරන්නේනැහැ!” කිව්ව මිනිහා ඔන්න පත්කරා ඇමතිවරයෝ සීයකටත් වඩා! එතනින් නැවැත්තුවෙත් නැහැ. 19 වෙන සංශෝධනයෙන් අසීමිත ඇමතිවරුන් ගණනක් නීත්‍යනුකුල කර ඇත.

4. ජනවාරි 2015 – 2017 දක්වා.
මහින්දගේ ආණ්ඩුවේ රටවෙනුවෙන් වැඩ කරපු නායකයෝ, රට බේරපු රණවිරුවෝ, රටේ ආර්ථිකය දියුණු කරපු නිලධාරී, රටේ සංවර්ධනයට කැප වුනු පුරවැසියන්, රට ශක්තිමත් කරපු හැම එක්කෙනාම සහ, ඔවුන්ගේ පවුල් වල අයයි, බොරු පරීක්ෂණ වලට ලක් කර, අත්අඩංගුවට ගත්තා.

මේවා සිදුවෙත්දී, දෙමළ ත්‍රස්තවාදීන්ගේ බොරු “යුද අපරාධ” චෝදනා රණවිරුවන්ට එරෙහිව දාන්න පටන්ගත්තා.

මේ කාලයතුල සිද්දවුනා සිරිසේනගේ තවත් අපරාධයක්.

5. ජුලි 2017.
සිරිසේනගේ හොර ආණ්ඩුව දැන් කාගන යනවා අළුත් ව්‍යවස්ථාවයක් පතිත කරන්න. 2014දි කිව්වේ සංශෝධන මිසක්, තව ලොකු දේශපාලන වෙනස්කම් කරන්නේ නැහැ කියලා. කෙසේවෙතත්, සිරිසෙනටවත්, රනිල්ටවත් දැන් කරන්න යන වැඩේට ජනවරමක් නැහැ. සිරිසේන රෙජිමෙයටයි දෙමළ ත්‍රස්තවාදීන් සහ විදේශීය ආන්දඩුවල් වලට සහ NGO කරයින්ටයි දේශද්‍රෝහිය අළුත් ව්‍යවස්ථාවයක් ජනතාවට බල කිරීමට අයිතියක් නැහැ.

මෙන්න තවත් සිරිසේනගේ අපරාධයක්.

මේ පිළිබඳව විමල් වීරවංශගේ ජනතා නිදහස් පෙරමුණය (NFF) පාර්ලිමේන්තු ව්‍යවස්ථා සම්පාදක මන්ඩල්යෙන් ඉවත් වන්න තීරණ කරපු එක ප්‍රසාදයක්. මහා සංඝරත්නයත් මේ ගැන කතා කලා.

6. ජුලි 2017 දක්වා.
පියවරෙන් පියවර සිරිසේන කරන්න හදන්නේ විදේශීය රටවල් වලට යලිත් අපව පාවා දීමටයි. මෙය පළමුව පටන්ගන්නේ රණවිරුවන්ව නිග්ග්‍රහ කරලා, ඔවුන්ව පාගලා, ඊළඟට ඔහුන්ගේ හමුදා නායකයන්ට නිග්ග්‍රහ කරන්න. ඉන් පස්සේ යුද්දෙ දිනවපු දේශපාලන නායකයන්ව නිග්ග්‍රහ කරන්න. “මේ ඔක්කොමලා අපරාධකරුවන්” කියන්න. ඊළඟට ඔහුන්ට බලය දුන්න මිනිස්සුන්ට කියයි, “උඹලට මොලේ අමාරුවක් තියෙනවා, නැත්නම් කොහොමද මේ වගේ අපරාධකරුවන්ට බලය හම්බවුනේ? මේවගේ දෙයක් අයෙත් වෙන්න දෙන්න බැහැ. අළුත් ව්‍යවස්තවයක් දාන්නේ මේ නිසයි.”

සම්බන්දන්, විග්නේස්වාරන්, හිටපු පොන්නම්බලම් වගේ දෙමළ ජතිවදියෝ සහ දෙමළ ත්‍රස්තවාදියෝ සහ රනිල්, මංගල, රවී, ලක්ෂ්මන්, රාජිත, චන්ද්‍රිකා, වගේ “සිංහල” දේශද්‍රෝහී, බෞද්ධ විරෝධී පාලකයෝ මේ රටේ අවුරුදු තිහක් තිස්සේ සිංහල විරෝධී යුද්දයක් ගෙනාපු එක ගැන හැමෝටම අමතකවෙලා කියලා සිරිසේන හිතන්නේ!

7. නිගමනය
මේ කෙටි කාලයෙන් සිරිසේන රටට විශාල හානි කරලා තියෙනවා. බොහෝ අපරාධ කරලා තියෙනවා. මේවා කරනවා කියලද ඔබේ ජන්දය ඉල්ලුවේ? මේ වගේ ද්‍රෝහී වැඩ කරයි කියලා තමයි ජනතාව රනිල්ට කවදාවත් ජනාදිපති ධුරයට එන්න දුන්නේ නැත්තේ, දෙන්නෙත් නැත්තේ. ඒක දැන ගන තමයි රනිල් මේ සිරිසේන කියන ප්ඹයෙක්ව ඉස්සරහට දැම්මේ.

මේ ජරා පාධඩ අපරාධ කරන සිරිසෙනට බේරෙන්න දෙන්න බැහැ!

Kirulapone Aftermath – Part 1

The huge crowd at Kirulapone for the Joint Opposition May Day rally was easily the biggest gathering on the day. Even more significant was that the tremendous JointOp crowd gathered despite the Pambaya pulling out all the stops to try and derail the rally. The JointOp was victorious against various regime threats, intimidation, sackings of Mahinda loyalist party organizers, police obstructions, and a complete lack of any state resources.

The official SLFP rally, purposefully held in far away Galle to prevent SLFP members attending Kirulapone, was a disaster. The tiny crowd didn’t even fill half the ground. Anticipating such a failure, the Pambaya had moved the stage forward, to be close to the entrance. And they had provided seats for everyone, which would take up even more space. There are rumors that the regime even forced the Navy to provide food and drinks to all participants. But this was all to no avail, as even the small space they artificially created at the Samanala grounds wasn’t filled. And let’s not forget the torrential downpour that literally poured cold water on the anemic event. If this was meant to be Pambaya’s relaunch, it looked more like his retirement party.

So it turns out that people voted not for a new politics but for the same old politics — as long as it was carried out by new faces. Most of the faces now at the top of Sri Lanka’s political pyramid aren’t really new at all though. They are in fact the faces of characters we have known for ten, twenty, thirty, forty and even more years. They are the same faces, just older, more saggy, more sclerotic and balder than when they first appeared.

And when the country’s once booming economy and rapid development was handed over to these old, old, old, stuck-in-the-past characters with ulterior motives, anyone could predict accurately the state of affairs we would see at the end of this tumultuous year.

UNP’s Failing, Flailing Electoral Strategy

Despite all the bluster, the UNP’s electoral prospects are terrible. Here’s why.

The Sirisena-Ranil alliance has created Sri Lanka’s first ever police state. Attempts to delay the elections until Mahinda was neutralized – through assassination or phony “war crimes” charges – failed thanks to the greed of Ranil’s close friend Arjun Mahendran. The exposure of the greatest financial crime in Sri Lankan history, one whose impact will be felt for many years in shaken investor confidence, caused parliament’s dissolution, as Sirisena was determined to bail out his puppet master.

In the general election 2015, we have a rematch of the presidential election of 2005. This time, the job in contention is prime minister, but after the passage of the 19 Amendment, the power now lies with this post, rather than the presidency. The policies, personalities, and projects which make up the two camps are almost unchanged from that earlier contest too.

In many ways, the Sri Lankan electorate is lucky that things turned out this way. They are being offered two contrasting – polar opposite – paths for the future. There is no more of the murkiness of a contest between Mahinda and Sarath Fonseka, or Mahinda and Sirisena. Instead, we have Ranil’s campaign of hate pitted against Mahinda’s vision for a future of rapid development which was halted after January 8th.

Ranil’s Motivation
Ranil wants to rule the country. The only thing standing in his way is the utter disgust that the majority of voters have towards him. This is mainly because of his shameless betrayal of the nation – signing the CFA with Prabhakaran, and then joining the “war crimes” bandwagon against Mahinda. Ranil’s one and only aim now is to destroy Mahinda.

After one week of campaigning, Ranil’s attack plans seem clear. Let’s get to it.

Sirisena Speaks

Many expected Sirisena to deliver a second backstab on July 14. Instead, he committed an hour-long hara-kiri.

Sirisena has been in big trouble for a long while. The actual turning point in his fortunes began on January 9, the day he became president. He had won the election on a series of lies, and sooner or later they were all going to be exposed. When that happened, his career would be finished.

He knew this of course, and so he along with Ranil began a witch-hunt against Mahinda Rajapaksa. The plan was no doubt to hound Mahinda out of politics, to deprive him of a platform from which to defend himself, and thereby to neutralize his standing in the country. After that, with the excuse of the “war crimes” concoction, Mahinda could be jailed, extradited and executed.

Deconstructing Sirisena: Sri Lanka’s first dictator

As we approach 200 days of the “100 day regime” of “perfect governance,” we see Sirisena for the crude, conniving politician that he truly is. Let’s unravel the Sirisena web of lies.

Maithripala Sirisena came onto the presidential stage in a manner so contrived that it looked scripted right out of the shadowy halls of the NGO dens of Colombo — as it turned out, it was exactly that. Here was a man from deep within the Rajapksa government, who apparently at great risk to himself, suddenly came out to denounce his leader, his party, and his nation. He said he had seen untold corruption and felt the need to stand up for “good governance” and to stand against “selling of the country” to certain foreign powers, meaning China.

Based on Mahinda Rajapaksa’s mistakes in communicating his plans and explaining his actions, and on the background of an anti-national drumbeat of derision and allegations — which were never confronted head-on by the Rajapaksa government — from the disloyal opposition led by Ranil Wickremasinghe, the swing voters and urban pseudo-middle class fell for Sirisena’s lies hook, line and sinker.

Sirisena said that Mahinda had bought helicopters, horses and Lamborghinis for his sons, all at taxpayer expense. Sirisena said that Mahinda and his ministers used artificially inflated Chinese loans to fund “corruption” and to sell the country to China through this indebtedness. Sirisena said that he would usher in a new, “perfect government,” to be led by Wickremasinghe for 100 days. Sirisena said that after those 100 days, he would dissolve parliament for a fresh, clean, new parliament to then continue with the “good governance” regime.

As we know now, Sirisena was lying.

Who really won on January 8?

Some of Maithripala Sirisena’s recent words and deeds have been so disturbing and so fundamentally anti-Sri Lankan that questions need to be raised about what exactly his motives are, and who exactly he is working for. Initially everyone thought his modus operandi was obsequiously sucking up to Ranil. But it looks like it is even worse than that.

Recently, Sirisena has done several things which need to be analysed.

First, he decided to change the Victory Day celebrations of May 19 to a “Remembrance” event. This beggars belief.
